Introduction & Background

The Uganda Paediatric Association (UPA) was founded in 1993 as a body which promotes improved health and welfare of all children in Uganda.

The Association is under the patronage of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Uganda. The UPA is affiliated with the Uganda Medical Association which is the parent Association.

  • Child Advocacy at every opportunity.

  • Collaboration with other stake holders.

Future Prospects

  • Workshops on Advocacy for new vaccine development with WHO, GAVI, and Pneumo ADIP.
  • Workshops on Newborn survival in collaboration with AOGU.
  • Launching of the East African Pediatrics Association.
  • Quarterly Newsletter release.

Membership Qualifications

Every medical practitioner holding a diploma or degree in Paediatrics and Child health from a recognized institution, residing in Uganda is eligible.

Visiting Paediatricians (Associate) and Post graduate students (Junior) are welcome upon council approval.

President

Hon. Dr. Anne Akullo (MBChB, MMed Pediatrics)

Dr. Anne Akullo is a pioneering Ugandan pediatric hematologist–oncologist and Associate Director for the Global HOPE program in Kampala, where she standardizes cancer and blood disorder care across Africa. A Makerere University-trained specialist and former WHO Technical Officer, she integrates sickle cell services into primary healthcare and uses her leadership at the Uganda Paediatric Association to advance health policy, develop the workforce, and foster continent-wide collaboration.

Hon. Dr. Barnabas Atwine (MBChB, MMed Pediatrics)

Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist. He is a lecturer at the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Clinical Head of cancer Services, Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

General Secretary

Hon. Dr. Sanyu Nalunga (MBChB, MMed Pediatrics)

Dr. Sanyu Nalunga is a paediatrician with nine years of experience in child healthcare. Her interests include adolescent health, sickle cell disease and the management of common childhood illnesses. She is committed to compassionate, family-centered care and has a passion for teaching and mentoring healthcare workers. Dr. Nalunga serves as the General Secretary of the Uganda Paediatric Association.

Hon. Micheal Atuhairwe

Dr. Micheal Atuhairwe is a dedicated paediatrician committed to providing compassionate, child-centered care for infants, children, and adolescents. He focuses on preventive health, early diagnosis and evidence-based treatment while creating a warm and reassuring environment for both children and their care-givers. His goal is to partner closely with families to support health growth, development and lifelong wellbeing.

Programs Manager

Ms. Juliet Biculu (BCP, DIMA, MS. Clinical Psy)

Ms. Juliet Biculu is a Clinical Psychologist and Programs Manager with a strong commitment to advocacy and the promotion of improved health outcomes among young people and adolescents. She is deeply passionate about education, empowerment and mental health promotion with a focus on initiatives that effectively bridge clinical practice and community engagement.
